Lasisi Saka, a 66-year-old driver, has been murdered inside his apartment at Moshalasi, Alimosho, Lagos State, for allegedly refusing to pay his utility bills.
Residents of the area allege that Saka, a father of two who lived alone in his room, was murdered by an unnamed co-tenant who had been arrested by the police. The suspect was said to have severally quarrelled with the victim over Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) electricity bills in the past.
The victim's brother, Akinbowale Emmanuel, said that Saka had several times reported to his family that the suspect had threatened his life over payment of PHCN bills and sundry issues.
"Saka's first wife died some years ago," he said. "On Saturday, he called the woman he is now courting to bring him food that evening. But the woman said it was late that day. When the woman got to the house the next day, she saw Saka drenched in his blood. She screamed and called his friend, a pastor, on phone. It was his friend that called me when he saw him dead. I went witha friend to confirm his death and it was glaring that he was murdered."
The suspect was eventually arrested and he has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department. Police sources at the department said investigations were still ongoing in the matter.
