Christopher Katongo wins BBC African footballer of the year

Zambian player Christopher Katongo has been announced the winner of the 2012 BBC African footballer of the year.

The 30-year-old Zambia captain beat off competition from Demba Ba, Didier Drogba, Younes Belhanda and Yaya Toure to become the first winner from southern Africa in the history of the award.

The African cup of nations winner is currently playing for a Chinese super league club Henan Construction FC.

Katongo said it was a fantastic moment for him and he is thanking the people who voted for him; he said is something he will never forget in his career.

Players were shortlisted based on their skills, technical abilities, teamwork, consistency and fair play, and was drawn up by football experts from every country in Africa.

Katongo becomes the first winner from the Southern African region and has joined the league of players who have won severally in the past years.
