According to gossip website TMZ, the man who filed the police report stated that Paris was 'making out' with his girlfriend on the dancefloor of the XS Nightclub inside the Encore Hotel before the incident occurred.
A jealous River is said to have come over and punched the onlooker so hard that he needed medical attention.
The model was ticketed for misdemeanour battery and released, with the incident resulting in no serious injuries.
Paris has insisted she wasn't kissing another girl that evening, accusing the other couple of harassing her.
A source told RadarOnline.com: 'According to Paris, another couple had been harassing them at XS, and the guy was getting to close to the hotel heiress, and River just shoved him away from his girlfriend.
'River didn't hit the dude, he was just protecting Paris and trying to give them a little space.'
Paris is meanwhile standing by her man.
She hotel heiress insisted after the fracas that River is a 'good guy'.
