Two hundred inmates serving various jail term
have regained their freedom in Adamawa State,
following the intervention of the wife of the
state governor, Justice Binta Murtala Nyako.
It was gathered that she facilitated their release
through her pet project, Adilaaku Free Legal Service.
Justice Nyako, who stated this in Yola yesterday
during the flag-off of the project, lamented that
several inmates have been at the Jimeta and Yola
prisons for a long time awaiting trial.
She said about N900, 000 was paid as fines to secure
freedom for the prisoners, and urged other
organization to do something to help in checking
prison congestion. She added that the project,
Adilaku, is meant to fight human trafficking, street
hawking, domestic violence and rape.
Speaking earlier, Governor Murtala Nyako,
represented by the state's Attorney General and
Commissioner for Justice, Barr.Ibrahim Tahir,
commended the organization for embarking on the
project and assured government's support.
