Flavour - I Dumped Music Scholarship To Please My Mum

Away from his sensual music videos and suggestive waist movements, contemporary Nigerian highlife artiste, Flavour Na'biana, cuts a different picture when you meet him in person.


Flavour says he is able to switch between the two different personalities in him. The singer, who started out playing drums and guitar in his local church, describes himself as a modest artiste.

"If you watch my videos, listen to my songs and then meet me one-on-one, you will be disappointed. When I am on stage, I am Flavour but off the stage, I am simply Chinedu Okoli (his real name). Away from the show business, my daily routine is simple. After doing my morning chores, I am either off to the studio, busy playing pool or play station or simply chilling with my colleagues. I am not a party animal."

It is only a week to his 29th birthday party scheduled to, according to him, take place at a five star-hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, but Flavour is already in high spirits. Having transformed from a young lad who is best described as a 'local champion' in Enugu State, to one of the most sought-after Nigerian artistes, the singer describes his rise and achievements in less than three years as surreal.

"I feel humbled and blessed, because of the love and appreciation I get from my fans. Well, when I started I wanted fame so much but now sometimes, I wish I could do some things without people noticing me. One of my career's highpoints was when I shot a video in Paris, France with Fally Ipupa because it simply shows how far I have come. I am constantly overwhelmed, such that I find it hard to explain."

In October, he officially launched his third studio album, Blessed, and opened his latest business venture, 2 Nite Klub Lounge, in Enugu. With the club, he has joined the growing number of Nigerian stars diversifying into other areas.

He says, "It is a part management deal I have with a friend and big brother Frank Obasi, the CEO of Toscana Hotel, Enugu. It feels good because it is something I had always wanted to do. It has always been my personal aspiration to own a night club. It is a joint venture with Obasi and it is located in his hotel premises. I am not going to leave music because it is skin deep. "

In recent times, Twitter has afforded a number of Nigerian stars the opportunity to engage in self-aggrandisement and communicate with fans. However, Flavour sort of received an endorsement from American super star, Keri Hilson, last month when the latter tweeted, "Now playing Ashawo Remix by Flavour. I love this song. I have no idea what he is saying, I just love the song. "It came as a surprise to his followers.

Confirming the post, the singer, who is barely active on social networks, says, "Yes, at first I thought it was one of those media stunts, but when it was verified, I felt appreciated and humbled, not just for my music but for African music and how far we have come. It shows that music is a universal language and I plan to collaborate with her on a song when she comes to Nigeria over the weekend. I am yet to decide if it is going to be a new track or one of my old hits."

Commenting on the new trend of collaborations between Nigerian singers and foreign artistes, he says, "It is really good to collaborate but it's better when there is a good chemistry between both artistes so, I advise people not to rush into collaborations because of fame but for the music."

Like other artistes, the decision to do music is one that is often met with stiff opposition from parents or guardians. For Flavour, it was a tough call convincing his mother to support his decision. According to him, his mother was in support of his musical career during his days in the church. But a meeting later with a music label executive which he regarded as a blessing ironically strained the relationship between him and his mother.

"It all started when the resident pastor at his church introduced him to a friend, Chris Ordor, the CEO of SoundCity Communications, who had just started a musical company aimed at training young musicians on the rudiments of music and nurturing them all the way to a professional level. Shortly after in 1996, I was invited to join the company on an educational scholarship to study music at the University of Nsukka. But my mum will not hear of that because she had a brother who had earlier failed in his music career but I understood her fears.

''In 2001, when the label moved to Port Harcourt, I found it hard shuttling between Enugu and Port-Harcourt, as a result I had to prematurely terminate my scholarship due to my mother's refusal to allow me move to the Garden City," he explains. WAEC withholds 101,398 results for widespread malpractice

West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has said that 101,398 candidates who sat for the 2012 May/June West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, will have their results withheld for alleged involvement in examination malpractice.

Addressing newsmen yesterday, shortly after the 54th meeting of the Nigerian Examinations Committee, NEC, Hajiya Fatima Abdulrahman, National President of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, ANCOPSS, on behalf of the NEC said: "In deliberation on the conduct of the Council's May/June examination diet, the Committee considered all the cases of examination malpractice presented by the National Office and took appropriate decisions in line with the policies of the Council.

"Having considered malpractice cases, about 101,398 candidates out of the total number of 1, 695, 872 candidates who sat for the May/June WASSCE in Nigeria would have their results withheld based on reports of their alleged involvement in examination malpractice."

Banky W announced as MTV VJ Search judge, to release new singles

The hunt for MTV Base's new VJ is heating up, and with just over two weeks to go until the auditions, R&B boss Banky W has been announced as a judge!

Although he won't be the only judge on the show, Banky will be helping identify the brand new VJ who will become one of the key faces of the music network, hosting programmes on MTV Base and on the MTV Base Block on STV.

Goldie and Prezzo to wed secretly?

Rumours have been flying around and we can't help but assume that Kenyan rapper Prezzo and Nigerian pop singer Goldie are in a relationship.

Sources are now claiming the celebrity pair are planning to tie the knot.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but we have information they may have already picked a date : Saturday, February 9, 2013.

Those who claim to be insiders allege Prezzo has visited Goldie's parent's residence in Lagos to ask for their daughter's hand in marriage. We could however, not immediately confirm this. Doctor-turned-artiste, Sidney Esiri, more popular with his stage name, Dr. SID, has lashed out at media site, The NET, for scoring D'Prince's new album, 'Frenzy', 3/5.

In its report, they had written: "Frenzy partially lives up to its name, as it boasts of songs that fuel your party rage. It just doesn't take you through the whole night as it runs out of ideas and gets low on creative fuel.

Blackberry Introduces Free BBM Voice Call

This is a terrible news for mobile phone companies especially those in Nigeria. BlackBerry maker Research In Motion is announcing a new feature for its popular BBM messaging service. It will allow its customers to make free voice calls over a Wi-Fi network.

RIM said Wednesday that BBM users will be able to switch back and forth from a text chat to a voice call. RIM also says a split-screen option will let them talk and text at the same time.

The Canadian company says the BBM voice feature is especially attractive for developing markets. Unlike regular texts, BBM messages are not charged on a per-text basis.

RIM is struggling in North America to hold onto customers who are abandoning BlackBerrys for flashier iPhones and Android phone. But the BlackBerry continues to sell well in markets like South Africa, Nigeria and Indonesia.

The word happiness is relative and it varies in terms of personal belief and experience. According to me a Happy Life is something that helps me to be content from my inner self. As depicted earlier, happiness varies in terms of personal belief, I believe in the happiness that not only satisfies me, but also makes my near and dear ones feel good.

An important object of happiness is sacrifice. We must sacrifice something or the other to see our closed ones happy. According to me it is very important to prioritize whom we want to make happy and how important it is to sacrifice something for that. For example, I love my mom and I also love to smoke, but my mom does not want me to smoke at all. In this case, I need to decide what can make me more happy- smoking, or my mom's happiness that she gets if I quit smoking. For me, second option would make me happy. In this case, I need to sacrifice smoking. If someone opts to have the first option, he has to sacrifice his mom's happiness to be happy.

A Happy Life, in a nutshell, is a life of our choice, and it's our choice that makes us what we are.

MTN has announced Gladys Ebube Essien-Garricks, a 27 year old student based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State as the winner of its Ultimate Wonder "Win an Aeroplane" promo.

Ghanaian Singer, Becca Disowned By Dad Over Plans To Marry Manager

Ghanaian journals are reporting that Ghana's up and coming beautiful singer, Becca has been disowned by her father, Mr. Acheampong over the singer's intention to reportedly marry her manager, Kiki Banson.

Mr. Acheampong was quoted to have told a Ghanaian newspaper, "Becca is no more my child and she can do whatever she pleases with her life. She is of no importance to me anymore. She is grown so if she thinks Kiki is the one she really wants to marry, she can go ahead and marry him.

"I have already disowned her. I don't care if the mother supports her or not. Looking at my health condition now, I wouldn't want to do anything that will affect me and the rest of the family.

"Everything I gave her has been taken back. She is no more my child and will never be my child, not even when I'm dead."

The report said that Mr. Acheampong is badly upset with Becca's decision to marry Kiki, whose marriage collapsed with accusing fingers pointing at Becca over the singer's relationship with Kiki.

Mr. Acheampong reportedly called Kiki a criminal and a very wicked man who signed his daughter, Becca, at the age of 17 to 18 years by signing her on a 10-year contract without the consent of her parents or any member of the family claiming Becca was 18 years and could decide and choose to do anything she liked. After collaborating with Chris Brown on two remixes earlier this year - and rekindling a friendship with him following the dissolution of their relationship in 2009 - RiRi's also revealed that fans will hear him on her new album, as well.

The singer released the official tracklist for her upcoming release, "Unapologetic," and among collaborations with Future and Eminem is one with Brown.

The song, perhaps appropriately titled "Nobodies Business," will undoubtedly cause many to read it as "nobody's business."
